Giving back to the environment we love

In January 2020, we collaborated with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans and participated in the world-renowned Cape2Rio race!

One of the many messages that the campaign highlighted is that one dump truck of plastic per minute enters the ocean every single day. This amounts to an equivalent of around eight million tonnes of plastic annually. According to the WWF, “the real cost to the oceans is in the order of US$13 billion per year.” That’s roughly R188 billion!

During its weeks of preparation, the homechoice-sponsored trimaran “Love Water” was berthed in the V&A Waterfront. It was here that homechoice chairman and crew member, Rick Garratt, signed the South African Plastics Pact at a special WWF event. We are one of the first companies in the country to sign this pact!

Led by skipper Craig Sutherland, the crew of eight set sail on their transatlantic journey on 11 January 2020. Over the course of their voyage, the crew posted about plastic pollution on social media, using the hashtag #ourplasticourproblem. In a record-breaking win, Love Water was the first to cross the finishing line and completed their voyage in only 7 days, 20 hours, 54 minutes and 2 seconds!
